Gay mortal kombat

Kung Jin wields a bow and arrow system for melee and projectile attacks. Either way the way they wrote it seems too intentional to be an accident. An area where the games were admittedly mortal was in their LGBTQ+ representation, something that the developers sought to rectify, albeit rather fleetingly, in Mortal Kombat X. Introduced in ‘Mortal Kombat X,’ Kung Jin was the first and only Kombat character in Mortal Kombat before the reboot of the entire franchise.

Ever since the franchise rebooted, more LGBTQ narratives have unfolded, including one that involves Mileena’s own LGBTQ storyline. I absolutely love that they actually made an attempt and didn't just go for a stereotypically flamboyant gay man and instead focused on how it affected his life than making it his entire personality.

Kung Jin is not a gay character, simply a character that just so happens to also be gay. Introduced in ‘Mortal Kombat X,’ Kung Jin was the first and only LGBTQ character in Mortal Kombat before the reboot of the entire franchise. As gay gay person myself I'm thrilled to see a gay character in a video game series I've spent my entire life loving.

Kung Jin is a character hotly contested in the fandom as a lot of people have a problem with his usually uncalled for rude behavior, and while that is a conversation for another day I think one thing is undeniable, he is damn good LGBT representation. The character is the first male LGBT fighter of the Mortal Kombat series, and has received significant media attention and discussion about the representation of LGBT characters in fighting games in general.

Afterall, the characters are always written with the intention of being straight, regardless of how it ends up coming across. But hey, a few days into July is close enough right? I was mostly referencing any time it was mentioned inside of MKX considering that was the game he was in, but that's also good to note.

Mortal Kombat X, an installment with decidedly mixed opinions. Some people loved the game and others hate it because this is really when the story started in the downward spiral we see today. Hopefully Jin will make a return soon and be the best rep he can be! Kung Jin is the only Kombat kid with a real arc that factors into the ongoing story, while Takeda, Jacqui, and Cassie struggle or fail to have any arc or personality in the story.

So many great statements. My only hope is that in the future it isn't made quite as subtle, but till then I guess things could have been so much worse. Plus it is heavily implied that Kung Jin suffered a lot of homophobia from his family considering how worried he seemed to be about the Shaolin not accepting him, so I'm wondering if they did that because Liu Kang is also a Shaolin monk.

Also Liu kang literally dates an assassin. You walk a fine line when writing gay characters. However it also stands as the first game in the series with a canonically gay character.
